Articulated Sounds — Data Licensing

Audio built by human hands, available for responsible ML research

We offer a fully rights-owned, actively expanding catalog of professional sound recordings for machine learning datasets. We are selective about partnerships and prioritize projects that respect the value of human creativity.

Why this dataset stands apart

Recorded across 60+ countries over 12 years, this is one of the most geographically and acoustically diverse audio datasets available anywhere. Locations span remote rainforests, wildlife habitats, coastal environments, urban centres, transportation systems, and rare acoustic ecosystems that few recordists ever reach.

That geographic and ecological diversity is what makes this dataset genuinely rare — many companies have terabytes of audio; very few have recordings like these.

A deep, varied catalog with no grey areas

Every recording in our catalog was produced by Articulated Sounds — in the field, on location, or in controlled studio conditions — by a founder and network of collaborators bringing diverse expertise. All rights are fully owned by Articulated Sounds. No third-party content, no ambiguous claims.

Each file has been individually edited, cleaned, mastered, and metadata-tagged to professional library standards. This is not a dump of raw recordings — it is a curated, production-ready dataset with no unwanted noise, artifacts, or quality inconsistencies.

The catalog is actively growing — new libraries are released on a regular basis across all categories, with significant unreleased material in preparation.

Professional quality. Clear ownership. No grey areas.

Many publicly available audio datasets suffer from unclear provenance, inconsistent quality, fragmented metadata, or uncertain licensing status. Articulated Sounds offers professionally curated recordings with clear ownership and licensing pathways.

Typical Public Dataset Articulated Sounds
Often aggregated from multiple sources 100% recorded and owned by Articulated Sounds
Variable recording quality Professionally captured, edited, and mastered
Inconsistent metadata structures UCS-compliant metadata, expert-tagged throughout
Unclear licensing and provenance Clear ownership — no third-party claims
Limited recording formats Stereo, surround, Ambisonics, and ORTF-3D immersive
Common and widely duplicated content Rare locations, unique field recordings from 60+ countries

A decade of fieldwork. Thirty years of expertise.

Articulated Sounds was founded in 2016 as an independent sound library built on craft and authenticity. The catalog has been developed by its founder alongside a network of specialist collaborators — all recordings fully owned and curated by Articulated Sounds.

That depth of experience and curatorial consistency is built into the dataset itself.

“We are selective about who we work with. We prioritize partnerships where human creative work is acknowledged, fairly compensated, and not used to produce content that competes directly with the humans who made it.”

Used in world-class productions

Articulated Sounds recordings are used by leading sound professionals across film, television, games, virtual reality, and immersive media.

Customers include supervising sound editors, sound designers, and audio teams whose work has contributed to productions such as Stranger Things, Frozen II, and Star Trek: Discovery.
